Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser to remove unwanted hair, whether for hygienic or cosmetic reasons. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in our practice and in the U.S.
During the procedure an intense, pulsating beam of light targets and destroys pigmented hair. It requires specific device training to perform and carries potential risks.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time. The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.
Most patients have permanent hair loss after an average of three to seven sessions.
Prepare
You should limit plucking, waxing, threading and electrolysis for six weeks before treatment so that the hair roots are preserved and the laser can target them effectively. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair.
You should also avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment. Sun exposure makes laser hair removal less effective and can cause complications after treatment. Summer might not be the best time to start laser hair removal if you spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun. Many of our patients start treatments in the fall or winter so that their series of treatments is complete by the warmer months.

Laser Hair Removal Considerations
During your laser hair removal consultation with Dr. M. Zakir Sabry, he will answer questions you may have about the procedure and will discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery.
Procedure
Just before the procedure hair in the treatment area will be trimmed (or shaved) to a few millimeters above the skin surface. The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness, and location of the hair being treated as well as your skin color.
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. Treatments are needle-free and do not require anesthesia. Most patients feel nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band.
Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period.
Most patients are free of the unwanted hair for several months. When the hair re-grows, most patients see noticeably less hair than before and it also tends to be finer and lighter in color.
Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed.
