Breast Reconstruction
The goal in breast reconstruction is to restore one or both breasts to near normal shape, appearance, symmetry and size following removal of a breast (mastectomy), or correcting a congenital deformity.
Breast reconstruction, performed by Dr. M. Zakir Sabry, often involves multiple procedures performed in stages and can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date. The convenience of starting reconstruction simultaneously is getting a jump-start early and avoid additional anesthesia. However, delaying reconstruction, in no way, means that you may no longer have options or your results may not be as good.
Breast reconstruction generally falls into two categories: implant-based reconstruction or flap based reconstruction.
Implant reconstruction relies on skin expansion, followed by a suitable implant insertion to help form a new breast mound. Flap (or autologous) reconstruction uses patient’s own tissue from another part of the body to form a new breast and this could be either pedicled ie. Flap stays attached or free-flap where tissue is removed from another part of the body and sutured into new blood vessels at the chest level.
Factors that should be considered in choosing a type of reconstruction are – type of cancer, need for additional treatment ie. Chemotherapy or radiation treatment after surgery or, simply based on patient’s preference.
Dr. Sabry mostly performs expander to implant breast reconstruction. He will guide you through the process of choosing the right type and size of implant and help understand implant safety. He performs autologous reconstruction for those who do not prefer to have an implant.
If only one breast is affected, it alone needs reconstruction. However, to obtain symmetry, size and shape, a breast lift, reduction or augmentation may be performed on the opposite breast. This however, is strictly your own choice.
Women may also choose prophylactic mastectomy based on family history and other risk factors. In this case, both breasts are reconstructed.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Reconstruction Surgery
Breast reconstruction surgery is appropriate for patients who want to restore their normal breast shape immediately following a mastectomy or during a future surgical session. Patients with congenital deformities are also excellent candidates.
Patients with realistic goals are excellent candidates for breast reconstruction surgery. Candidates must make time for breast reconstruction surgery and the recovery process.

Breast Reconstruction Consultations
During your breast reconstruction consultation with Dr. M. Zakir Sabry, he will answer questions you may have about the procedure and will discuss any safety concerns related to the surgery. You will discuss your goals for breast reconstruction surgery.
You must disclose all drug allergies, medical conditions, and past medical treatments. Your medical records will be evaluated, and the breasts will be examined. This will help to determine the risk factors of breast reconstruction surgery.
Depending on the details of your case, a personalized surgical plan will be developed. Specific instructions will be given for preparation, often including changes in current medications. Recovery directions will also be given.
The Recovery Process
Aside from the gauze or bandage, the patient will have to wear a supportive bra to protect the reconstructed breast during the recovery period. Drains may be inserted to remove excess fluids. Patients may experience minor swelling and pain for the first few days.
Physical activities will be prohibited for the first week. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor the progress of healing and assess the results of the surgery.
