Rosacea

RosaceaRosacea is a skin disorder that generally affects fair skinned adult women between the ages of 20-50. It is progressive and worsens over time. It may start to manifest as diffuse rosiness or redness in the cheeks and center of the face. As it progresses, pustules bumps and papules may appear. For that reason it is very often mistaken for adult acne.

Although there are 14 million Rosacea sufferers in U.S., only 1.1 million Rosacea patients seek treatment for the disease from their Physician each year. Most people with the disease may not even know they have rosacea or that it is a diagnosable and treatable condition.

Many patients may just assume they blush easily or have gotten sunburned.

Laser and IPL Treatment options

Rosacea Before & AfterRosacea characteristically involves the central region of the face. It causes persistent redness or transient flushing over the areas of the face and nose that normally blush; mainly the forehead, cheeks, the chin and the lower half of the nose. These are characteristics that can often be treated with Laser Genesis and IPL.

Laser therapy is now widely considered the primary treatment for telangiectasia (visible blood vessels) and rhinophyma (enlarged nose). It is very effective for reducing diffuse and extensive redness as well as rough texture. Laser treatment is more elegant, refined and less painful than previous treatment options for these conditions.

Vascular laser treatments target the tiny visible blood vessels just under the skin that cause the red appearance. Heat from the laser’s energy builds in the vessels, causing them to disintegrate and thus the visible redness in the skin is diminished.

Generally, Dr. Sabry suggests at least three Laser Genesis or IPL treatments at six-week intervals, depending on the severity of redness and telangiectasia. In some cases Dr. Sabry will ask his rosacea patient to use medications during treatment intervals to manage the papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples) that often go along with rosacea. Good follow up home care is essential to maintain remission of the condition.

Prepare

Dr. Sabry will meet with you to go over your concerns and assess your symptoms. He will recommend a treatment plan that may include one or all of the treatment modalities as well as medications and take home skincare products. Our medical aesthetician will go over the procedure details with you and explain any risks and possible complications. Your medical and personal history will be reviewed, to make sure you have no contraindications.

Procedure

You may be scheduled for Laser Genesis, IPL, Chemical peel or HydraFacial MD. Your skin will be cleansed with a basic cleanser to remove any make up, sunscreen, and topical products. After cleansing, if you are getting IPL or Laser Genesis, your eyes are covered with protective eye wear and the treatment areas will be covered with a cooling gel. Chemical peels and HydraFacial MD do not require protective eyewear. The treatment you receive will be calibrated for maximum efficacy with little to no discomfort.

Recovery

Immediately after the treatment your skin will appear pink and flushed, which is expected. Sunscreen will be applied to your face before you leave. The Laser Genesis procedure does not cause bruising or irritation. Chemical peel patients may have a recovery period in which there is exfoliation, depending of the peel selected. HydraFacial MD treatments do not require recovery time.
